The big difference between the mics is the E906 has a three position presence EQ switch, and the E609 silver does not. You can make the E906 sound like the older E609(black) or the E609 silver or an in between sound.Even without hyping the 5kHz presence the e906 is a little more articulate in the mid-high range than the e609 - but the two are still pretty similar overall. If you were just looking for something comparable to a 57, or just using it to mic a guitar rig, it would be hard to justify the extra money for the 900 series.The old black/gold version (MD409) has a huge reputation, but I don't think it deserves it. To me it sounds the same as an e906 in flat presence mode. The e609 to my ear sounds a lot like the e906 in boost presence mode. Anyway you look at it the e609 is a nice mic, but the e906 is better, if you can afford it.
