Some of my favorite authors in this genre are Patrick O'Brian, Bernard Cornwell, and Colleen McCullough. I also love Larry McMurtry and Dan Simmons, but their works are probably somewhat over-fictionalized. I am quite often drawn to Historical Fiction. Easy to understand simple and more action. The excellent balance of action and philosophy/deep stuff just the right amount that the reader can understand . From book 3 onwards it all gets way full of philosophy and things thst just blow your brain trying to understand them. Book 5 and 6 while decent are just wierd. Book 1 to 3 is peak dune imo.

Offhand, some of my favorites are The Zodiac Trial, Your Turn to Die, Siren’s Call, Contemporary Gods, The Hero’s Journey, Cinderella Phenomenom, Butterfly Soup, Death Becomes You, Project: Perfectly Normal, and Cooking with Belmont. "Song For the Unraveling of the World" by Brian Evenson is a collection I adore, as are "Books of Blood" by Barker. H. P.
