Basically, 4Kids thought that One Piece was a story meant for children, but soon learned upon starting the adaptation that there was murder, adult themes, and violence throughout it.

Best bet would be to try and track down some of the dvd releases. Everybody's saying it's impossible to find, but just look on amazon. They have 4kids' One Piece on DVD, even though it's only 3 episodes each. It looks like they have all the way up to episode 52, which (in the 4kids dub) is during Chopper's arc.
