Personally, I think max stamina is the best way to do it. When you pick the special at an inn or make special food, it gives you an extra stamina wheel (making 4 maximum), and/or a few extra golden hearts. However, what's notable is that no matter how much you upgrade stamina, There's always room for the extra 4th wheel.
