It’s common to play the high G and high G-flat in a very inward second and third position. These are pretty close to halfway between 1-2 and 2-3 respectively. Each partial has its own tendencies, and each instrument is slightly different. But knowing these three tendencies already puts you into advanced trombone technique.
A good example is the high G on 2nd position, where you have to adjust the slide to somewhere in between 1st and 2nd position to play it in tune. The high note appears to be a high G, not an A. So you have an octave jump. Middle G in 4th position, the high G in sharp 2nd - - which is just about midway between 1st and 2nd. Practice playing between the notes at a slow tempo, and try to keep the volume and sound quality the same in both octaves. Some of us are very big on alternate positions. Even though G in #2 is normally preferable to G in 4 or 6, we practice all of them routinely. I remember an anecdote a friend told me. He had studied with Dennis Wick in London.
