Loosen up the screws that hold the carb on, turn your carb so you can get to the bottom of it, remove the 4 screws that hold the bowl on, once its off, take carb cleaner and spray the area where the float is real good.

I think these might run more on the blackish mark, but if it's a real dark black it would indicate it is running rich which could explain the back fire. I even brought it to the honda shop and they replaced the needle valve and it still leaks. I also changed the fuel valve that turns the gas on, off and reserve.
