Feb 14, 2021. #1. Directly behind the oil pressure gauge is a small hole in the governor housing. Oil will go through that hole and run down a trough to the oil tube. Remove the oil pressure gauge and take a small stiff piece of wire and you can unclog the hole. I had the same issue with a 37 A. It takes some. patience but it can be done. OP.

YOU PROBABLY HAVE A PISTON HANGING UP OR A LEAKING INTAKE OR EX-VALVE IN THE PUMP. The check valve in the early 4020 was at the transmission pump and is prone to failure to cause loss of all hydraulics with the clutch pushed in on the SR tractors. The side console 4020 moved that check valve up front and up top so if it leaks it doesn't drain the cooler/reservoir. If stand-by pressure isn't above 1700 psi the priority valve would be blocking pressure oil to 3 pt. Stand-by pressure should be 2250 psi. John deere 4020. Power steering works great. I run a 64 4020 gas, first year for 4020 so your late 4010 would be a 63. The aluminum carb was a real bad deal, the big iron carb with vacuum accelerator pump was not much better. In my opinion the carb on the 4020 was much oversize for the application and runs poor at anything but full load.

Total for the rebuild was $700 but was still cheaper than buying a reman brake valve, at least according to the local JD dealer anyway. Good News....the original brake valve was rebuildable. It solved the entire problem and it stops great. No more wheel lock up. The JD 4020 is now ready to go back to work.We have 9 3020-4020 tractors and they all act as you describe.We just live with it because after 1 minute all the hyd. work fine,part of farming with 40-50 year old tractors.I don't start in the mornings like I did 25 years ago either.LOL.
