The 300 f/4 PF is about as sharp as its predecessor, which is plenty sharp for most people. The 300 f/4 PF + TC-14e III also handily beats the 80-400 at the 400mm end. Even with a TC-17e II at 500mm, I still find the 300 f/4 PF sharp enough on my D810. Encouraging to hear.

I would need to see a 100% zoom screen shot of both side by side, and view that at 100% zoom so that we see pixel-to-pixel.

Yes a 800mm f5.6 + TC is doable. Actually, I was wondering about getting to 800mm f/5.6 by using the 2x TC on the upcoming 400mm f/2.8. In other words, put a 2x TC on and not use the internal 1.4x. My thinking is the additional length of the optical path that exists for the internal TC might preclude the usage of traditional TCs.
