Serial number AYD 1233.It says Smith and Wesson us paten'd then gives a list of dates. It appears to be .38 s&w. It does have a hammer and it is d.a. Great gun, extremely accurate, and never failed me. (We had to buy our own gear back then).

Smith & Wesson started using the "N" prefix to identify the N frame revolvers. Those revolvers were shipped starting in about 1969, after the existing inventory of "S" prefixed frames were exhausted.
