I failed the surgery shelf. I knew it was my hardest shelf till date but I didn’t expect to fail. I did all the Uworld and NBME practice questions. Studied them hard. Yet the actual shelf exam content was quite different from what Uworld or NBME tested. I’m so shocked rn. I still have a chance to pass the rotation when I pass the shelf retake.

My uworld average is 48% for the surgery questions. I find there are more tricks and distractions than I’m used to. 48% puts me at a low percentile, like 4-6th percentile. I need 10th (65% ish correct) on the shelf to pass. I have no way to tell if I’m going to pass or not.

I think 85-90% (raw) of the exam is preppable, but the last 10-15% is random ass nonsense within crit care, neph, GI, or card medicine that is extremely hard to get right. Uworld added a TON of surgery questions this year so I think Uworld surgery + relevant IM parts will be more than enough. I did UWorld Surgery and AMBOSS surgery and scored in honors range (>75% national average). After having done UWorld IM questions for IM, I can say those would be helpful for the surgery shelf as well.
