It comes across on screen, but it's better if you know all their back stories and little personality quirks. The later books get MUCH deeper into the sci-fi element of things. Outlander really sets the stage for all that later in the series. See I'm of the opinion you should read the book after, if the book is better.It doesn't get different, if that's what you're asking. They move locations, add in some characters, but overall what you see now is what you're getting from now on. Somebody gets kidnapped, somebody gets raped, Claire and Jamie have sex, let’s go touch a stone, rinse and repeat. My wife and I love this show.
